Interior Painting and Colour Choices, Fall 2024

Color Trends in Interior Painting

As we navigate through the ever-evolving world of interior design, colour trends play a pivotal role in creating inviting and stylish spaces. Color can significantly influence mood, perception, and the overall ambiance of a room. In 2024, several noteworthy trends are defining the palettes used in interior painting.

Before I get into the colour perspectives of 2024, I wanted to tell you my personal philosophy that can help clients in choosing colour as we move into our holiday months. Its easy as we paint now to get swayed into seasonal hues, so this is a good little forewarning so you can make a choice for the next 5 years, and not this season. My biggest piece of advice, and something I learned from colour experts during my tenure at Sherwin Williams was to get to know your client. I have always told clients to assess their own personalities, and what spectrum they would lie on in terms of their life views. Are you more conservative, calm, regal, traditional, or more liberal, expressive, and lively. From there, what is your favourite colour? And last, what colours do you not like? Once I get an assessment of that, it gives us a good starting point to work from. Traditional colours will be your browns, pastels, whites, more modern will be your greys, accent walls, blues and greens. The colours you like, and do not like as well allows me to suggest whites or browns or greys with undertones that your mind may subconsciously look for, and avoid the ones your mind resists.

The last unique perspective, but common sense thought on colour is actually throwing colours on the wall. Sherwin Williams Test Pods called Colour to Go have never failed me in helping a client see their top 3 choices, and choosing one they actually like. The only thing we can not dial in is sheen, but that often is a conversation around durability and other sheens in your house. I find the new Eggshell is often Matte these days, and baseboards are going Eggshell.

Some last protips, consider the pictures on the Sherwin Link attached to the article, you will notice full painted out walls with the same colour (some people are even extending to the ceilings). Its a classic European way to paint, and can accent your woodwork in a big way.

1. Earthy Tones and Neutrals

The trend toward earthy tones continues to gain traction, leading to a resurgence of colours like terracotta, warm taupe, and muted greens. These shades bring a sense of calm and connection to nature, making them perfect for living spaces, bedrooms, and even kitchens. They create a cozy, inviting atmosphere while allowing for vibrant accent pieces. The use of soft neutrals, such as creams, beiges, and grays, complements contemporary decor styles, providing a versatile backdrop that can adapt to various design elements.

2. Soft Pastels

In contrast to bold, vivid colours of previous eras, soft pastels are emerging as a key trend for 2024. Colours like blush pink, soft lavender, and gentle mint green add a refreshing touch without overwhelming a space. These hues are ideal for creating serene environments, perfect for bedrooms or nurseries. Soft pastels can also be used in living rooms to curate an airy feel, especially when paired with lighter furnishings and decor.

3. Bold Dark Hues

On the opposite end of the spectrum, bold dark hues such as deep navy, charcoal grey, and forest green are making a strong statement in interior painting. These colours add drama and sophistication, making them ideal for accent walls, dining rooms, or libraries. They work exceptionally well in rooms with ample natural light and can create a cozy, intimate environment when used strategically.

4. Jewel Tones

Rich jewel tones are also making a comeback, drawing inspiration from nature’s most vibrant colours. Shades like emerald green, sapphire blue, and amethyst add depth to interiors and are often used to create focal points in a room. These colours pair wonderfully with metallic accents and can elevate the overall design, offering a sense of luxury and elegance.

5. Experimental and Multi-Color Spaces

As creativity takes center stage, many homeowners are moving towards experimental designs that incorporate multiple colours within a single space. Techniques like color blocking, ombre effects, or featuring different colours on moldings and trims can add personality and distinctiveness. This trend encourages a playful approach to colour, allowing individuals to express their unique style and preferences.

6. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Choices

The growing awareness of sustainability is influencing colour trends as well. Many paint brands are now offering eco-friendly, low-VOC options in a variety of trendy colours. Homeowners are increasingly looking for paints that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also contribute positively to their living environment and the planet.

Conclusion

Choosing the right colours for interior painting involves understanding current trends and selecting shades that resonate with personal tastes and lifestyle. In 2024, we see a beautiful balance of earthy tones, soft pastels, bold dark hues, and jewel tones, all encouraging creativity and self-expression. Whether embracing the calming nature of muted shades or the exciting flair of vibrant colours, the key is to create spaces that reflect individual style while enhancing the ambiance of your home.
